関係副詞の種類と用法

関係副詞は、先行詞の種類（時、場所、理由、方法）に応じて使い分ける。
when (時): 先行詞が時を表す名詞 (time, day, year など)。on/at/in which などで書き換え可能。
where (場所・場合): 先行詞が場所 (place, house, city など) や状況・場合 (situation, case, point など)。in/at/on which などで書き換え可能。
why (理由): 先行詞が the reason。for which で書き換え可能。
how (方法): 先行詞が the way。in which で書き換え可能。ただし、the way how とは言わない。

関係副詞は、先行詞の種類 (時・場所・理由・方法) に応じて使い分けます。

先行詞が時を表す名詞の場合に用い、「～する(時)」の意味を表します。

I remember the day when we first met. (私たちが初めて会った日を覚えている。)
- (=… the day on which we first met.)
Spring is the season when flowers bloom. (春は花が咲く季節だ。)
- (=… the season in which flowers bloom.)
Tell me the time when the party starts. (パーティーが始まる時間を教えてください。)
- (=… the time at which the party starts.)

先行詞が場所を表す名詞の場合に用い、「～する(場所)」の意味を表します。また、物理的な場所だけでなく、状況・場合・局面などを表す抽象的な名詞を先行詞とすることもあります。

This is the house where I grew up. (ここは私が育った家だ。)
- (=… the house in which I grew up.)
We visited the town where Shakespeare was born. (私たちはシェイクスピアが生まれた町を訪れた。)
- (=… the town in which Shakespeare was born.)
That was the point where we disagreed. (そこが私たちの意見が合わなかった点だ。)
- (=… the point at which we disagreed.)
There are cases where this rule does not apply. (この規則が適用されない場合がある。)
- (=… cases in which this rule does not apply.)

先行詞が the reason の場合に用い、「～する(理由)」の意味を表します。the reason why… の形が基本です。

例: Tell me the reason why you were late. (あなたが遅刻した理由を教えてください。)
- (=… the reason for which you were late.)
例: That’s the reason why I chose this university. (それが私がこの大学を選んだ理由です。)
- (=… the reason for which I chose …)
【補足】
- why の代わりに that を用いたり (the reason that …)、why / that を省略したり (the reason …) することも多いです。
- 先行詞 the reason が省略され, That’s why… (そういうわけで～) の形で用いられることも非常に多いです。

先行詞が the way の場合に用い、「～する方法」の意味を表します。

例: This is how he solved the problem. (このようにして彼はその問題を解決した。(これが彼がその問題を解決した方法だ。))
- (= This is the way in which he solved the problem.)
例: Tell me how you learned Japanese. (あなたがどのようにして日本語を学んだか教えてください。)
- (Tell me the way in which you learned Japanese.)
【注意】the way how… とは言いません。 必ず the way (that) … または how … のどちらか一方の形を用います。
- 例: This is the way (that) he solved the problem. (how は使わない)
- 例: This is how he solved the problem. (the way は使わない)
