関係代名詞 that の用法

that が好まれる/主に用いられる傾向がある場合:

• 先行詞が最上級(the -est), 序数(the first/second…), the only, the very, the same, the last などで修飾される場合 。
  • 例: This is the best movie that I have ever seen.
• 先行詞が all, every, any, no, little, much, something, anything, nothing, everything などを含む場合 。
  • 例: All that glitters is not gold. (光るものすべてが金とは限らない。)
• 先行詞が「人+人以外」の場合 。
  • 例: Look at the boy and his dog that are running over there.
• 関係詞節が疑問詞 Who, Which, What で始まる疑問文の場合 。
  • 例: Who is the man that is talking to her?

that が使えない場合:

• 非制限用法 (カンマの後) 。
• 前置詞の直後 。
